Things To Do: Bury Lane, Houseplant Glasshouse Open Weekend

The Bury Lane Glasshouses are open on Saturday 6th September 10am-4pm and Sunday 7th September 11am-4pm

This is THE experience of the year for plant lovers, tour the vast glasshouses, full of sustainably grown houseplants, and see for yourself the state-of-the-art  lighting, heating and watering methods used.  Plants are available to buy at greatly reduced prices.

Bury Lane have been growing cut flowers for a number of years, which are sold on to major retailers, and of course also available direct from Bury Lane.

In recent years, they’ve opened their fields to the public, for “cut your own flower” experiences, and this year alone, have displayed peonies, dhalias, delphiniums, agapanthus, gladioli, tulips and sunflowers. Pumpkins arrive in October!

What made Bury Lane move into houseplants? Houseplant sourcing is currently unsustainable in the UK. Almost all of the plants currently available for sale are grown in peat in Holland (using gas for heating) and then imported at great environmental and financial cost. Bury Lane have a passionate belief in sustainability and grow their houseplants in growing medium recycled from waste coir using renewable heat.

What varieties are available? Bury Lane grow approx. 30 varieties, but are always trialling new ones. Look out for some of the special Philodendra and Alocasia, as well as the classic Monstera, Strelizia, Musa, Pilea, Aloe Vera  and many more.

What can visitors expect? This is your chance to see a unique growing environment and range of sustainably grown plants. The growers will be present, and visitors will be allowed to buy any of the plants they like in the glasshouse, ranging from intricate Syngonium, to metre tall Monstera. Regrettably due to step and pipework around the glasshouses, no wheelchair or pushchair access. Children are welcome but must be supervised at all times.
