Spotlight On… Royston Rugby Club – Rugby for Everyone!

Founded in 1961, Royston Rugby Club has been at the heart of the community for over 60 years, offering rugby for all ages and abilities.

From our tiniest players aged 4 and up, right through to our senior men’s sides and social veterans’ team, there is a place for everyone to get involved, have fun, and be part of something special.

Our thriving mini and youth section is the pride of the club, with boys and girls learning not just rugby skills, but teamwork, confidence, and friendship. Players from our youth squads have gone on to achieve incredible success, representing Hertfordshire at Under 17, Under 18, Under 20 and Senior levels, joining Premiership academies at Saracens and Northampton Saints, and England Touch Under 20s. Alex Martin has been capped for Poland Under 20s and for London and South East Under 20s, and most notably, Jonny Weimann is now contracted at Northampton Saints with six caps for England Under 20s.

Each year, our minis and youth enjoy an exciting tour to play other clubs across the UK. It is a highlight of the season, a chance to strengthen friendships, build team spirit, and make lifelong memories both on and off the pitch.

We are also proud to run girls only sessions for players aged 8 and over who want to give rugby a try in a supportive, fun, and confidence building environment. Open to all abilities, the sessions focus on teamwork, skill development, and having a great time while learning the game. Our girls also have the chance to play matches against other Hertfordshire sides, where the focus is firmly on collaboration, enjoyment, and growing together as a team. Training takes place on Mondays from 6.30 to 7.30pm, and new players are always welcome to join in.

Our men’s section continues to go from strength to strength. The 1st XV enjoyed a fantastic 2024–25 season, securing promotion as league winners and now competing in Herts Counties 2. The 2nd XV provides valuable depth and a pathway for developing players, while our veterans’ team brings together past and present players for a few social fixtures each year, always with plenty of laughs and post-match camaraderie. What makes us especially proud is the number of homegrown players in our senior sides, many of whom first picked up a rugby ball on The Heath at the age of four and have stayed with Royston ever since. It is this loyalty and love for the club that truly embodies the Royston spirit.

Our thriving Touch Rugby group welcomes anyone aged 14 and over to come along and give rugby a try, with no tackles or scrums, just fast paced fun and plenty of laughter. It is a brilliant way to stay active, meet new people, and enjoy the sport in a relaxed, inclusive setting. Touch sessions run every Wednesday at 7.30pm, and newcomers are always welcome.

We welcome new players of all ages and experience levels. Mini and youth training takes place on Sundays on The Heath, girls only sessions run on Mondays (6.30–7.30pm), Touch Rugby is on Wednesdays (7.30pm), and the men train on Tuesdays and Thursdays (7.30pm) with matches on Saturdays.
