Hockey was first played on Therfield Heath in 1957 and although Royston Hockey club currently play our home games at Peter Boizet Sports Ground, Granchester Road, Cambridge CB3 9ED, our home is in Royston Golf clubhouse on Therfield Heath.
We continue to thrive with five senior teams. Three Men’s and two Ladies teams playing competitive Hockey in the East Leagues.
The big plan is still to build or play on a suitable Astroturf surface in Royston, which will allow us to grow back to where we were running nine adult teams, with over 150 juniors of all ages.
With a thriving and again growing junior section across boys and girls of all ages, and 70 plus adult players coupled with active Vice Presidents and Supporters we currently have nearly 150 members.
We are now looking for a paid coach to develop our junior section who train on Sunday mornings at King James Academy, Garden Walk, Royston, and push our current coaches to new levels. They have done a fantastic job keeping our juniors motivated and involved.
Development is key to keeping and growing players as they become young adult Hockey players.
Development is also key to our adult teams as we look to recruit an adult coach and new players from both senior and junior levels. We work with parents and helpers to run a separate junior committee, now a self financed club within Royston Hockey Club and is a credit to the managing team.
Junior Hockey currently runs on Sundays:
10am – 11.20am
U8s mixed(Year 2/3)
U10 Boys and Girls(Year 4/5)
U12s Boys and Girls (Year 6/7)
U14s Boys and Girls ( Year 8/9)
Older players are welcome for a “back to hockey” experience and then asked to attend adult training on a Wednesday evening at St Marys and Homerton College sports ground, Long Road, Cambridge, CB8 2DP as England Hockey does not recommend training or playing on 3G pitches.
