Spotlight On… Royston Allotments Open Day

Royston Allotments are once again opening their gates to the public and heating up the BBQ!

The allotment holders would love you to come and visit their beautiful site, at Coombes Hole (at the junction of Green Street and Melbourn Road), Royston, on Sunday 11th August, 11am – 2pm.

It’s an opportunity to come and explore this normally secured site, see what has been growing and chat to plot holders. The chickens are always particularly popular.

There will be some mouth-watering treats to buy. As well as the tasty BBQ there will be a fresh produce stall and, inside the Clubhouse, you can find homemade cakes, bakes and hot drinks. There will be gazebos, tables and chairs outside so you can relax and enjoy your treats in the sun or rain!

This year plot holders have been invited to join a few competitions and the entries will be on display. They always have a produce tray competition in which plot holders fill their tray with a lovely variety of produce that they have grown, and the trays are always bursting with colour, scent and flavour! This year, look out for an ‘unusual edibles’ competition, which will provide inspiration for some interesting varieties and lesser known crops.

One of their guests last Summer was the then Mayor, Cllr Lisa Adams, who they really enjoyed showing around. She kindly shared her experience of the day, writing:

“Today I visited my local RAGA – Royston Allotments. A wonderful relaxing area where locals can grow their fruit and veg. We had tea & cake, then I had a look around and got to hold a chicken, she was most delightful. Before heading back and signing up to RAGA which is £5 a year. Great to support a natural area which is very important.”

Lisa is now a RAGA ‘Garden Member’ which means she has access to perks such as the onsite shop and discount seed scheme; this is a great way for gardeners to get involved even if they don’t have a plot.
