Spotlight On… Hedgehog Hospital at Shepreth Wildlife Park

SWCC Hedgehog Hospital, located at Shepreth Wildlife Park, is a vital refuge for one of Britain’s most cherished but vulnerable mammals—the hedgehog.

Established with a deep passion for wildlife conservation, the hospital has become a critical lifeline for hedgehogs suffering from injury, illness, and the effects of habitat loss.

The hospital’s primary mission is the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of hedgehogs. It is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities where these creatures receive expert care for ailments such as dehydration, malnutrition, and injuries from cars or garden machinery. The team, made up of dedicated volunteers and staff, works around the clock to ensure that each hedgehog has the best chance of recovery and a safe return to the wild.

In addition to hands-on care, the Hedgehog Hospital is committed to raising public awareness about the declining hedgehog population. SWCC actively engages the community through educational programmes, workshops, and campaigns, teaching people how to create hedgehog-friendly environments in their gardens and neighbourhoods.

The Hospital has also undertaken important research known as the blue tagging project, which focuses on studying the behaviour and survival of hedgehogs after their release into the wild. This project is part of the hospital’s broader mission to conserve the UK’s declining hedgehog population.
SWCC’s work highlights the impact a dedicated group of individuals can have in preserving a species at risk, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy the presence of hedgehogs in the British countryside.
