Royston Environmental Group: Be Sustainable this December

Eating Sustainably at Christmas!

It’s the season to be jolly, but it’s also the season when mountains of food end up in the bin. In the UK, we throw away around four million Christmas dinners every year. That’s two million turkeys, five million puddings, and a shocking 17 million Brussels sprouts heading straight for the waste pile.

The good news? You can make a big difference with only a few small changes. Start by planning your festive menu and writing a shopping list – and stick to it! Nearly half of Brits admit to overbuying at Christmas, with leftovers often uneaten. Check what’s already in your cupboards before you shop, and think realistically about how much your guests will eat. BOGOF and other bulk deals are only good value if you can actually use them; planning will save you money at this expensive time of year. Planning your menu can help reduce overeating too, and kickstart those New Years’ Resolutions!

Let everyone serve themselves; it cuts waste and keeps food fresher for seconds later. And if you still have leftovers, get creative. Turn roast veg into soups, turkey into curries, or freeze portions for a stress-free meal in January. Royston Library has a great selection of recipe books or you can search online.

Finally, remember that unopened festive treats like mince pies or biscuits can brighten someone else’s Christmas – please help others by donating to the food bank based at Royston Evangelical Church. (Find details at thelistingmagazine.co.uk/spotlight-on-royston-food-bank).

Let’s make this Christmas about sharing joy – not food mountains.
