Royston Day Centre is open to all elderly people of Royston and the surrounding area.
Everyone will receive a warm welcome and is treated as an individual at the beautiful setting at The Old Barn in Upper King Street. Elderly people are welcomed three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and given the opportunity to participate in activities and crafts. A hot home cooked meal is also on offer.
The centre strives to create an environment where no one is judged or discriminated against and there is no prejudice. With this in place we aim to make the service personal. Individual needs are considered in order to ensure that everyone’s needs and requirements are responded to in the correct manner.
Each individual is treated with dignity and respect. Our service is to help promote mental wellbeing and to help stop so many elderly people feeling isolated and lonely and helping them to keep their independence while remaining active and having the chance to socialise with other peers in the same age bracket. The Centre works closely with Royston Community Transport which provides a taxi service to and from sessions for those that need it.
Throughout the year people who attend the centre are treated to a Summer Excursion, a Christmas Lunch and a Christmas Afternoon tea!
The Day Centre was originally established in the 1970’s when it was located at the Town Hall. Following an award winning restoration project carried out in the late 1980’s, The Old Barn at the top of Upper King Street became the new home of the Royston Day Centre in 1990.
Although the centre is funded by government grants, it is unusual in not being owned by the County Council. The Town Council provide a small grant to subsidise meals. Centre manager Sharon ensures the smooth running of the operation supported by a group of volunteers. Sharon is always on the look out for more volunteers to help prepare meals and run craft or other activities and she would be delighted to hear from you if you think you can spare some time. The building is also used by other groups which have a link to health and wellbeing like The Stroke Club who use it weekly.
