News from our Clubs & Societies: Royston & District Probus

Royston and District Probus Club, a club for retired professional and business men, meet on the second Thursday of each month for lunch and socialising. On alternate months a guest speaker is invited.

On 14th August the speaker was DJ Bassan who came from RBN Gurdwara Sahib Northampton – Gurdwara is a place of worship- to tell us about Sikhism. DJ together, with his colleague Harpreet Singh, explained that Sikhism was established by ten Gurus, divine spiritual messengers or masters, over the period from 1469 to 1708. These teachers were enlightened souls whose main purpose in life was the spiritual and moral well-being of the masses. Today, Sikhism teaches tolerance of all faiths and respect for humanity. Five symbols which stand as powerful symbols of Sikh identity, spirituality, and commitment to the way of life were explained. One of the symbols is a Kirpan, or sword, which is not meant to be a weapon used for violence or aggression, but rather a symbol of a Sikh’s commitment to justice, self-respect, and the defence of the oppressed. When asked if it was OK to carry a kirpan it was explained that the U.K. government has passed an amendment to The Offensive Weapons Bill by which Sikhs in the country are allowed to carry a kirpan and use it during religious and cultural functions.

DJ also explained that Sikhs operate free food kitchens, called Langar, as a fundamental part of their faith and tradition, rooted in the principle of selfless service and equality. This practice ensures that anyone, regardless of their background or belief, can receive a free meal, fostering community and demonstrating the Sikh value of treating all as equals. DJ explained that he and his colleagues feed many many less fortunate residents of Northampton on a regular basis.

There were 24 Probus members present, many of whom said after the talk that it had been not only interesting but also fascinating. A collection from members amounted to £160 which has been donated to the RBN Gurdwara Sahib Building Fund.
