Club News: Royston Meridian WI – January Update

The first meeting in January was a fascinating talk by Judith Large about the work by the Shepreth Hedgehog Rescue. The centre is manned by volunteers apart from the manager and work under Medivet Melbourn. In 13 years, they have taken in over 700 hedgehogs.

Hedgehogs are on the INUC Red List of Threatened species although in Royston there are a large number of hedgehogs in and around the gardens of Royston. Judith explained that a difficult thing for hedgehogs is moving between the gardens, she explained that by taking out a small amount of wood from the bottom of a fence they are able to move from garden to garden to forage for food and bedding. 80% of their menu consists of worms although when the weather is hot and dry, they will eat slugs and snails but surprisingly these are not good for them and can lead to illness.

The next meeting of Royston Meridian WI is being held on Thursday February 12th in the Heritage Hall in the Town Hall and starts at 2pm when we will be entertained by Sea Shanties.
