Fred the Printer, formerly Elite Printers, is a true family business, launched in 1989, with daughters Katie and Carly working in design and operational roles, and their Mum Denise in admin support.
The business relocated to Buntingford from Cheshunt two years ago when Fred moved to the area, and are now focused on building up their local customer base. The family all enjoy being part of a small community where local businesses and people support one another.
What do you particularly like about the area?
Carly: Royston and the surrounding villages have a lovely community feel. I really appreciate the mix of countryside and independent businesses, and the way people genuinely support local services.
Fred: Royston is a busy town, with many businesses
Katie: My favourite place is the Heath – whether walking my dog Ted, meeting friends at the Heath Café for coffee and cake, or enjoying a cold drink in the sunshine during the warmer months.
What’s your favourite local place to eat?
Carly: There are some lovely cafés and pubs in the area. I enjoy finding cosy spots for a relaxed lunch or coffee with friends. I really enjoy the Bomber breakfast at the Woodman Inn in Nuthampstead.
Fred & Katie are big fans of Ashiana Spice indian restaurant, and their fabulous host, Icky! The food is amazing every time. Fred can’t resist a pint in The Old Bull Inn either!
Do you have a favourite local Shop?
Carly: I’m a big fan of independent shops and small businesses. It’s always nice to see local makers and traders doing well, and I try to support them whenever I can.
Fred: All our local independents are good.
Katie: It has to be Ladds – my kids love going there to spend their pocket money and I always manage to find a lovely gift whether for a birthday or an end of year Teacher present.
What’s it been like to relocate your business?
Carly: It’s been lovely getting to know people in the area. We’ve met a wide mix of customers, from local businesses and charities to individuals planning special events, and it’s always rewarding to help bring their ideas into print.
Fred: Since the move, I’ve met many local people which has been great.
Katie: The business has settled in well and we’ve had the pleasure of working with lots of local businesses both in Buntingford and Royston. Everyone we’ve worked with have been keen to support us as a local, independent family business and we like to give the same back by visiting as many shops, cafes and restaurants as possible.
What do you love about your work?
Carly: I love the creative side of design and the satisfaction of seeing an idea turn into something tangible. It’s always rewarding helping someone create something they’re proud to share, whether that’s for a business, an event or a personal project.
Fred: I started out in printing in 1971, and have always been passionate about it!
Katie: Above all, I love working with my family although it can also have its challenges! I get a great sense of achievement when we deliver on a project that exceeds expectations and we’re fortunate to receive some lovely feedback from our clients.
How do you spend a Saturday?
Carly: A slow start to the day, getting outside for a walk, and catching up with family or friends. I teach an online yoga class on Saturday mornings, which is a lovely way to connect with people and have a little wiggle on the mat before the day begins. I also work as a massage therapist, both of which focus on helping people slow down and look after their wellbeing. In my spare time I enjoy being creative – crocheting, reading and listening to podcasts.
Fred: I race my pigeons during the summer and also enjoy singing, sometimes appearing in local pubs
Katie: I start with an 8am Crossfit class, followed by my children’s football matches especially if it works that I can get to see both games. Then a family walk with our Hungarian Vizsla Ted, at the Heath or Wimpole, or if the Crows are at Home we enjoy watching them as a family. In the evening it has to be Gladiators on the TV with a nice dinner, or a cheeky takeaway. I also love reading when I get free time.
Night in or night out?
Not suprisingly, Fred prefers to be Out Out, whilst his daughers love a cosy night in, with good food, and a chance to unwind after a busy week!
What has been the most valuable life lesson that you have learnt?
Carly: To slow down and trust my intuition. Life doesn’t need to be rushed, taking steady steps and following what feels right often leads you in the right direction.
Fred: Whatever it is you want, set your stall high, and it will happen
Katie: To always give your best effort in everything you do. If you’ve tried your best at something, that’s all anyone can expect of you.
