Words are the threads that weave us together as a community. From ancient times to today, the way we speak shapes our relationships, builds trust, and influences how we feel about ourselves and each other.
Words may be the most powerful tool we possess. They have shaped our survival, relationships, and cultures for millions of years. Words are more than just meaning; they carry energy, sound, vibration, and emotion. They can lift us or wound us, sometimes more deeply than any physical injury. Bones heal in months, yet words can linger for a lifetime.
Japanese researcher Dr. Masaru Emoto famously photographed the effect of words on water crystals. Water exposed to “love and gratitude” formed stunning, intricate shapes, while crystals subjected to negative words appeared chaotic and broken.
In yoga, love (ahimsa) and gratitude (santosha) are core principles. Practicing gratitude daily transforms our inner dialogue:
“I have not” becomes “I have.”
“I am not” becomes “I am.”
Instead of looking outward for validation, we recognise that we already have enough, and that we already are enough.
Every word we speak, whether to ourselves or others, sends out a ripple. Those ripples shape how we feel, the choices we make, and the world we create.
Our words matter. Let’s choose them with love.
Speak With Intention:
-
- Pause before speaking: give your words space to land well.
- The poet Rumi offered a simple but powerful guide: “Before you speak, let your words pass through three gates: Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary?”
- Speak with gratitude: start and end conversations with thanks.
