Mindful Living by Becky, Chanting Stork Yoga this August: 5 Ways to Maintain Wellbeing with Kids at Home for the Summer

Let’s face it, it’s challenging to find time for yourself amidst the fun and activities with your kids. So, here are some strategies to help you stay on track with your health while still enjoying time with your family.

1. Physical activity for everyone! Turn exercise into a family affair by going for bike rides, playing sports in the park (I’ve already learnt new cricket skills), and finding new places to take long adventurous walks. Pack a picnic, and voila!

2. A good diet. It’s all about balance, right? My ice cream intake doubles over the summer but making ice lollies at home becomes a fun activity. Let the kids tell you what they want to learn to cook, and then enjoy some time preparing the food together. Fill the snack drawers up with nutritional snacks, nuts, fruit, and yogurts to encourage everyone to grab a healthy bite. Staying hydrated is also essential, those famous words “I’m hungry” can be because they are thirsty.

3. Relax. Time off, and doing nothing is also okay. Everyone needs downtime, including little ones. In fact, schedule it in. Kids can free play, read, create, or build Lego while you put the kettle on.

4. You time. If it’s impossible for you to attend your normal fitness classes, check if your tutor offers any online Zoom classes or on-demand videos. Kids can even get involved in your class, maybe learn a little yoga and mindfulness, or perhaps they can watch a movie while you get your happy cells moving and breathing!

5. Sleep. Make sure everyone gets enough sleep by keeping up with the bedtime routines. This is crucial for happier kids and parents the next day.

Enjoy your summer and take the pressure off by slowing down and giving yourself a break whenever you can.
