Autumn Alchemy: Priorities for the Season of Change
As the seasons shift, autumn invites us inward; a time of release, reflection, and renewal. In yoga and Ayurveda, this is the season of letting go, just like the trees shedding their leaves, and creating spaciousness for new growth.
One way to honour this seasonal alchemy is by breathing with intention. The crispness of the air reminds us of the power of pranayama: gentle practices like alternate nostril breathing bring balance, while victorious breath (Ujjayi) sharpens focus and clears mental fog.
Autumn is also the perfect moment to release what weighs you down. Whether it’s clutter in your home, habits that no longer serve you, or conversations left unspoken, letting go lightens both body and mind. Pair this with nourishment and stimulation: warming spices such as ginger, cinnamon, and turmeric not only strengthen digestion and lungs but also balance autumn’s airy, unsettled energy.
Movement during this season is best kept steady and rhythmic; nature walks, vinyasa flow linked to breath, or restorative yoga to ground the nervous system. Balance circulation with stillness, creating a practice that both energises and calms.
And finally, autumn is a season to cultivate gratitude and vision. A daily practice of thankfulness opens us to inspiration and helps transform endings into fresh beginnings.
At Chanting Stork Yoga, these priorities guide our teaching; from the breath we share, to the postures we practice, to the stillness we hold together. This autumn, may your practice remind you that letting go is not loss, but the space for something new to grow.
