Mindful Living by Becky, Chanting Stork Yoga: A New Year

A New Year Through the Lens of Awe

January can arrive with a strange hush. The sparkle of December settles, the days are still short, and the world feels like it’s holding its breath. But tucked inside this quiet is a gentle invitation, one that can shift how we move through the first month of the year: awe.

Awe is that subtle widening of the heart the moment something makes you stop and think wow, even if the wow is only small and simple. It doesn’t need fireworks or mountaintops; awe thrives in everyday life. Researchers describe it as a way of softening the edges of our busy minds, helping us feel more connected, more present, more alive. A tiny inner reboot that changes the colour of the day.

January is the perfect landscape for awe. Winter skies streaked with pale pinks. The geometry of frost on a window. The steam curling from your morning cup. A robin puffed up against the cold, looking like it knows secrets. Even the stillness itself can feel like awe wearing a long winter coat.

And the best part: awe is accessible to everyone. Here are a few simple ways to invite it in this month.

Micro-moments of noticing – Take sixty seconds each day to really look at something you usually rush past. A tree branch. A cloud. The pattern of your breath on the cold air. Let it expand for a moment.
The slow walk – Choose one walk this week and do it at half your usual speed. Not to be mindful or virtuous, just curious. Let your senses gather treasures.
Awe-sharing – Tell someone about one small thing that amazed you today. We underestimate how contagious wonder can be.
Night sky pause – Step outside after dark and tip your head back. Even on cloudy nights, something in us responds to the vastness above.

Perhaps that’s the quiet gift of January. Not resolutions or reinventions, but the chance to see the world with fresh eyes. To let awe slip in and brighten the edges.
Here’s to a month of tiny wonders.
