Community News – Learn To Drive a Steam Engine

The Royston and District Model Engineering Society was formed in the 1970s from attendees at evening classes in the Meridian School with the encouragement of the metalwork teacher Wally Moor.

Some members still hire the school workshops on Monday nights. The aim of the Society is to encourage the enjoyment in making and operation of models such as steam engines and boats. Members built a portable railway track to take to fetes in order to raise funds for its fixed track and clubhouse in Meldreth.

The Society meets monthly in the summer for running of club and members locomotives and traction engines. Talks and demonstrations in the clubhouse feature in the winter. Some members meet weekly at the clubhouse for maintenance and improvement activities as well as tea and a natter!

Would you like to learn to drive a steam engine? Minimum age 12. A training day is being held on Saturday 4th May, 10.30am-4pm at the Meldreth track SG8 6LG. Limited numbers, pre-booked only.
