Most doctors work at several different hospitals to gain experience, although they can only move to a new hospital, when another doctor leaves – so they all need to move at the same time.
August is the biggest rotation of the year, and this week, my team and I trained 256 new doctors how to use the Addenbrooke’s electronic patient record system in less than 3 days!
A doctor that we trained in 2017 also started an internet business at the same time, and in one of his videos he gave some very useful advice on goal setting.
To make goals effective and motivating, they need to be things that you have control over.
If your goal is to win the 800m gold medal like Keely Hodgkinson – that is an ‘outcome goal’ that you have limited control over. No matter how hard you train or how fast you run, if there is a faster runner on the day, no gold medal for you!
A better goal would be to run 800m in under 2 minutes within three years. This is what we call an ‘output goal’ but you still don’t know if that achievement is possible, so you might be disappointed…
The best sort of goal is the ‘input goal’. If you decide that, in order to run 800m under two minutes, you will need to train 6 hours a day, six days a week – then THAT should be the goal.
If you set your effort as the target, then you have complete control over it, and you will find this a much more motivating target.
And then, as you progress, test your hypothesis using appropriate metrics, and revise goals and expectations accordingly. And that is the way to a fit and healthy business!
