Julian’s Business Tips: New Year’s Revolution?

After taking a few months off to tackle some personal projects, I’m now back applying for jobs.

Although I’ve come close and received plenty of positive feedback, I’ve not had any luck yet – and as sole earner in my household, it’s hard not to worry.

A recent conversation with The Listing’s editor reminded me that worry is a thief of joy and time. Agonising over every ‘what if..?’ doesn’t help – you need to stay motivated without letting fear take over.

So I made a revolutionary decision: I wasn’t going to be precious. Despite previously being a deputy manager of a team of 16, nothing was off the table. December isn’t known for full-time recruitment, but it is full of seasonal and part-time opportunities, so that’s where I started.

During December, I’ve been doing a few shifts a week at a large local supermarket, picking groceries for online orders. You might think that’s boring – but au contraire!
Remember: you can’t always change your circumstances, but you can choose how you react to them.

I’m learning, listening, asking questions, and not afraid to look foolish – and that’s helped me find real value:
• It’s physical. About 9,000 steps a shift, plus manoeuvring a heavy cart — a free workout.
• It carries responsibility. You’re choosing the freshest items and making sure customers get good shelf life.
• It requires judgement. When something’s unavailable, you may need to pick a sensible alternative.
• It helps others. And that does wonders for your self-respect.
• It earns money. Not a fortune, but keeps the bills covered.

Whether you’re looking for a revolution or a resolution in 2026, stay active, stay curious, and stay positive. Put in the effort – and be ready to embrace opportunity when it knocks!
Happy New Year!
