What does Therfield Heath mean to you? Are you someone who walks all over, or do you only use it for one activity?
The Heath can be many things to many people. Currently the famous distinctive pasque flowers are in bloom. Rare in the UK, it only flowers on a specialised undisturbed habitat like Church Hill. Other areas will also be covered with a wide variety of wild flowers and grasses through spring to autumn. The Heath is also a haven for birds, butterflies and insects. Check out the Friends’ picture gallery on www.friendsoftherfieldheath.org.uk for beautiful photos of the wonderful wildlife.
The Friends provide different opportunities to use the Heath. Many families joined our Easter Egg Hunt at the end of March. Our En Plein Art group were using the pasque flowers for inspiration in April. The first Yoga on the Heath session was in March, with two further sessions happening in June and September. Our annual Bat Walk in the summer is at the planning stage. The second Sunday in any month will see people roaming the Heath picking up the rubbish that sadly is always left behind. In March our litter pick volunteers collected just over 30kg of assorted rubbish! Why not experience the Heath in a different way this summer with a quiet yoga session, an energetic litter pick or a slow walk spotting the wildflowers on Lankester Hill that you have seen on our picture gallery.
So we can keep running these activities, we are looking for some new and actively engaged members to be elected to our committee at our AGM on 21st July, in particular we are seeking a new Secretary.
