If you are, you may not have had a chance to explore Therfield Heath, a wonderful multipurpose piece of countryside on your doorstep.
The Friends are currently distributing our free Visitors Guide to Therfield Heath to the new areas of Royston. The Visitors Guide gives a sketch map of the Heath and its main features. Don’t throw it away, keep it tucked somewhere handy, so next time someone mentions the Gallops or Lankester Hill, you will know where they are.
The best sports facilities in Royston are based on the Heath and Therfield Recreation Ground. The guide shows where two long distance footpaths, Icknield Way and Hertfordshire Way, cut across this open space. Discover Church Hill and where to see the beautiful rare Pasque flowers which bloom in the spring. Those lumps and bumps in the landscape are neolithic and bronze age burial barrows, the best archaeology in Hertfordshire!
Watch the seasons change as you gently stroll through the woods or take a run along the footpaths. Take time to look up and see the abundant birdlife like red kites and listen to the skylark’s song; look down and watch the insects feeding from the many grasses and wildflowers.
Our online Visitors Guide can be found on www.friendsoftherfieldheath.org.uk
More paper copies are available in Royston library or on the left end of the bar at the Heath Café. We are a small charity, run by volunteers who support the Heath and Greens and fundraise by organising wildlife talks and other activities both on and off the Heath.
Join us at the next litter pick on the Heath on Sunday morning 8th March. All welcome.
Our thanks and appreciation go to all our volunteers and members for their support and help throughout the year.
