The day dawned bright and sunny and the warm-hearted people of Royston and the surrounding villages dug generously into their pockets to help the Royston Rotary Club collect £874.12 at the town’s Tesco on 28th September.
The donations will go to Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust, which is Rotary President Derek Pinner’s chosen charity for this year. “It was a great day,” he said afterwards. “You can always count on the people of our town. Their hard-earned cash will be supporting an organization that most of us have used at some time. We were particularly delighted to be joined at the collection by Royston Town Council Mayor, Cllr. John Rees.”
He added: “The Trust funds new services and facilities over and above anything that can be achieved by the NHS alone. It helps to ensure that the care provided is of the highest level and that patients and their families will benefit for years to come.”
The collection was organised by Rotary to help replace funds raised in the past by the town’s iconic kite festival, which was cancelled on Therfield Heath this year after Natural England objected, raising concerns about the event being held on a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The festival has been held on the heath for more than 30 years, raising £100,000 for mainly local charities.
“I felt honoured to be able to join the Rotary Club in their fundraising for a very worthy charity.” Royston Town Mayor, John Rees.
