Royston Recycling Centre and the Royston Repair Café have joined forces to cut waste in Royston.
With the support of Hertfordshire County Council, Royston Repair Café has teamed up with the Royston Recycling Centre to encourage recyclers to consider repairing broken items.
Posters have been put up at the Centre encouraging visitors to think twice as they empty their cars by directing them to the Repair Café, where they can get a free assessment of their broken items (and free repair where possible), and information about donating unwanted items.
“Whenever I take stuff to the Recycling Centre I’m a bit conflicted – I feel I’m ‘doing my bit’, but I also wonder whether the ‘rubbish’ I’m dumping is really beyond use.”
It was this sense of guilt that inspired Chris Lee to co-found the Royston Repair Café – a free local event to save people money and keep items in use for longer – more than a decade ago.
Herts County Councillor Paul Zukowskyj, executive member for Environment, Transport and Growth, said: “It’s fantastic to see Royston Repair Café and the Recycling Centre working together to promote a more sustainable mindset in our community. By choosing to repair or donate items that might otherwise be thrown away, we can all contribute to a more sustainable future, reducing waste and preserving valuable resources.”
The Royston Repair Café organise free repair sessions every three months.
