Community News: June News from Therfield Heath & Greens…

As summer heats up, Therfield Heath welcomes more visitors to take in its beautiful open spaces, now blooming with orchids, vetches and scabious and alive with butterflies.

But with dry conditions also comes the increased risk of wildfires. The Conservators of Therfield Heath and Greens would like to ask you to help protect the heath by ensuring cigarettes are completely stubbed out and disposed of safely. Even a small ember can ignite dry grass and quickly lead to a large-scale fire.

BBQs are also not permitted anywhere on the Heath due to the fire risk they pose. We also ask that you take all litter home with you – not only is it unpleasant, but discarded items can fuel fires and harm wildlife. Please leave your beautiful common in the same state you found it in.

Over the past winter, volunteers and the Golf Club cleared a significant amount of woody scrub – such as hawthorn and brambles – that threatened to encroach on the sensitive chalk grassland. Now that this material has been safely disposed of, we’re exploring more environmentally friendly methods of disposing of our green waste.

If you want to help us maintain and improve Therfield Heath, please join one of our volunteer groups by contacting Ellie Nadin, the Ranger at ranger@therfieldheath.org.uk.
