Community News: Celebrating Nine Centuries of Heritage

Royston Parish Church is opening its doors for Heritage Open Days on Saturday 14th September.

Participating for the first time as part of the nationwide Heritage Open Days Scheme, the Parish and Priory Church of Royston, the largest Grade I listed building in town, is opening its doors for free guided tours, the chance to try your hand at playing the organ, a children’s trail and demonstrations of bell-ringing. We will also be serving teas and selling home-made produce and souvenirs.

Find out the stories behind the dragon, knight, angels and Green Men in the church! Learn about the life of the monks in the days of the priory and discover the stories of some of the people who have worshipped at the church since the 1100s. See how the building has been magnificently restored following the devastating fire in 2018. Younger visitors can participate in a children’s trail or try their hand at hook-a-duck or winning chocolate in the tombola.

The Parish and Priory Church is situated just a stone’s throw from the intersection of two historic routes: Ermine Street and the Icknield Way. Over the centuries people ranging from Kings to Highwaymen have passed through Royston and many have visited and received hospitality at the Priory and Church. Follow in their footsteps and find out more about its heritage and experience how the tradition of welcome and hospitality continues today.

All are welcome to visit us on Saturday 14th September between 10am and 4pm, no need to book in advance.
