As spring approaches, we can reflect on a successful winter at Therfield Heath.
Our free mulch giveaway events in December and January were very popular, with all seven large bags quickly emptied by the local community. Chipping cleared scrub into mulch, and sharing it locally, is a far more sustainable alternative to burning. Over £100 in donations was raised for the Friends of Therfield Heath, all of which will be reinvested into the site. Look out for future giveaways in March and April to stock up on free, local mulch to add to your borders and gardens this spring! Find out more about the Conservators at the open meeting on Thursday 12th February at 7pm in Town Hall.
Between September 2025 and February 2026, with the help of 55 generous volunteers, we were able to carry out an ambitious programme of conservation work across the Heath. Together, we worked across more than 5,300 m2 to cut grass, clear bramble and cut woody scrub, across the Rifle Butts, Church Hill, Two Hills and Five Hills. 1st March marks the end of scrub clearing season and the beginning of bird nesting season. Visitors should keep their eyes and ears open for increased activity on the Heath as migratory songbirds return to nest and establish territories. We are very lucky on Therfield Heath to support strong populations of the fantastically musical Skylarks and Meadow Pipits—ground-nesting birds that are declining nationally. Because they nest on the ground amongst the long grasses, they are especially vulnerable to disturbance, particularly from dogs off the lead. We ask visitors to stay on main paths, keep dogs under control, and avoid walking through long grass. Thank you for helping us protect the amazing wildlife that thrives here on Therfield Heath.
We always welcome extra hands! If you’d like to get outdoors, learn more about local wildlife, and be part of a friendly conservation community, we’d love to have you join us as a volunteer. No experience is necessary—just enthusiasm and sturdy footwear!
Volunteering sessions run every Wednesday morning, 9.30am – 12.30pm – to find out more, email: volunteer@therfieldheath.org.uk
