We have unearthed (intentional pun) an amazing profile, this month, from our member Chris Montague.
Chris joined the society in the mid 1980s. 20 years earlier he had been bitten by the photography bug watching his father develop pictures in the garden shed dark room. The magic of the pictures appearing has kept a hold on Chris ever since. When he wanted to develop his photography he found camera club much as it is today with friendly members ready to share knowledge with a new member. His first camera was the hugely popular Kodak 120 Instamatic and Chris soon found his interest in aviation, wildlife & birds in particular. Those interests persist today.
Chris always joins club competitions but his strength lies in our exhibitions through the year where he almost always sells pictures. His images really seem to strike a chord with our viewers.
Chris is a true Royston figure, having been involved in the excavation of Royston Cave. This activity gave him a drive to investigate other items of local archaeology and a need to develop a metal detecting skill. In turn, this activity led Chris to discovering the nationally important Barrington Anglo Saxon cemetery. He detected a metal disc &, whilst digging it up, came across a bone which he was suspicious of. The county archaeologist confirmed the find as a 5th century shied boss. Further excavation uncovered the burial of an Anglo Saxon warrior and wider exploration confirmed an extensive cemetery.
What a fabulous story Chris has been able to share.
