Club News: Celebrating 40 Years of Royston Runners

2025 marked a very special milestone for Royston Runners as the club celebrated its 40th birthday! To honour four decades of running, friendship, and community spirit, the club has completed a fantastic series of events that bought together members of all abilities for fun, competition, and socialising.

The celebrations kicked off with the much-loved 3k Relays and BBQ on Tuesday, 17th June. This inclusive relay, held in memory of former club captain Sean Allen, saw teams of four runners competing over a 3km course designed to bring everyone close to the finish line regardless of pace. Congratulations to all who ran and supported on what was a balmy, sun-drenched evening filled with laughter and camaraderie. After the races, everyone enjoyed a delicious BBQ while raising awareness and collecting donations for Holly’s Active Stars, a local charity supporting young people’s access to sport.

Next up, Royston Runners took over the Wimpole Parkrun, bringing their trademark energy and enthusiasm to one of the region’s most scenic 5k routes.

Our club’s spirit was on full display as a team of dedicated volunteers cheered on runners of all ages and abilities with the warmth and enthusiasm that have defined Royston Runners for four decades as well as time keeping, scanning and marshalling the course.

One of the most heartwarming moments came on Saturday when our founder member, Maurice Hill, celebrated his 80th birthday in the best possible way—by running alongside his son Graham and grandson Thomas. Seeing three generations of the Hill family sharing the course was a powerful reminder of the club’s rich heritage and the strong sense of community that continues to inspire us all. Maurice’s enduring passion for running and his commitment to the club have been foundational, and it was a privilege for everyone present to witness this special family milestone.

Sunday morning brought the Junior parkrun, and it was fantastic to see so many young runners out on the course, full of energy and enthusiasm. We love to support the younger generation of runners and hope to see some at The Crows or Royston Runners in the future.

And finally, we had the the much-anticipated Summer Party on Saturday, 28th June. The event was a lively evening of socialising, music, and fun, giving our members a chance to relax and enjoy the company of fellow runners off the trails and tracks.

And we capitalised the celebrations with the great news that we have been promoted to League 1 in the Mid Week League. The women’s team incredibly scored 28 points out of 28 finishing top of the league with the men finishing a fantastic 3rd.

A brand new Couch to 5k programme will be starting again at Therfield Heath at 1pm on Saturday 20th September.
