Business News: Beatles Memorabilia… By Charles Hanson

As an auctioneer, I see hundreds of items, in amongst them certain items stand out, and an upcoming lot of Beatles autographs is definitely one of them.

Collected by a Cambridgeshire businessman in the early 1960s during flights between London and Liverpool, this set includes signatures from all four members—John, Paul, George, and Ringo.

What makes these autographs special is not just their rarity but the personal story behind them.

Take the Paul McCartney signature, in the rush of fans onboard, Paul mistakenly dedicated it “to Catherine” instead of the vendor’s sister, Celia. That little mix-up adds a unique touch to an already priceless item. Over time, the vendor managed to collect the rest of the signatures, with the final one from Ringo Starr secured several months later. These autographs have been carefully preserved by the family for 60 years, and now, they’re finally coming to auction.

Beatles memorabilia always generates a lot of interest, and with the clear provenance of these signatures, I’m expecting quite a buzz at our saleroom in Royston on 6th September. It’s not just about the autographs themselves but the history they represent, and I’m honoured to be part of bringing that to light.
