Chinese photo album achieves five figures in local auction

A Chinese photo album smashed its top estimate at auction to achieve a staggering £14,091 inclusive of fees in Royston.

The collection of photographs, entered into the Friday 6th December sale at Hansons Hertfordshire, depicted early photography believed to be from around the 1870s of the city of Fuzhou in South Eastern China.

Such pieces provide an important historical record of life in areas less photographed in the late 19th century and the images including local and European figures as well as architecture will provide an invaluable snapshot into history.

Consigned to sale on behalf of Baldock Local History Museum, the album had been donated to the charity as part of a collection and seemed destined for the bin until a representative sent Hansons an email enquiring if it might be something of interest.
