Continuing our republished series, “A Question of Royston”, covering the little-known history of Royston, as written by the late Councillor F John Smith (1932-2021).
Fish Hill Square is based at the north end of Market Hill and Fish Hill, where those two streets and John Street, Church Lane and Jepps Lane meet.
Until shortly after the 1939-45 War there was no square there at all, since the centre of the space was occupied by the Victorian fire station and a block of three-storey tenements. There were narrow passages – they could hardly be called streets – all round this centre. When the area was cleared it permitted car parking to take place. Because the access via the one-way system was from Fish Hill, the square got its unofficial name.
A scheme to improve the square was completed in 2012, and it’s now a sunny spot to sit and watch the world go by!
