Julian’s June Business Tips: Trusting Your Gut

For the last two months we’ve been talking about AI, but this month I want you to go back to basics and remember that you are a super-computer too!

Here’s a quick exercise. Think about how you feel about your business (or anything else important in your life), right now, on a scale of 0 to 10.  Zero means, “this is a disaster,” and 10 means, “things couldn’t possibly be better.” Got your number?

Now imagine adding one point. If you’re at a 5, what would your business look like if it felt like a 6?  Don’t overthink it—just trust your first instinct.  Then push it one more step. What would it take to feel like a 7?

When I tried this, I was surprised by how clear the answers were, what changes would take me from where I was, to two points higher.

This is a very different way of setting goals compared to all the lengthy spreadsheets, meetings, projections, and pros-and-cons lists.  Instead, it’s about tapping into intuition – which some say is your brain processing years of experience and pattern recognition, at a speed your conscious mind can’t match

Of course, there’s a catch.  The tricky part is distinguishing between ‘this feels right because it aligns with my values and vision’, versus ‘this feels right because it’s comfortable and I’m avoiding something scary’!

So here’s my challenge: try the +2 exercise with your business—or even another part of your life.  What would make you feel one point better, then two points better?  And what’s really stopping you from taking those steps?

I’m not saying you shouldn’t do traditional planning, but this quick exercise can really help to focus your thoughts and point you in the right direction.
