Volunteer opportunity at Saffron Walden Museum, help make every visit memorable. 

Saffron Walden Museum is inviting you to become part of its vibrant volunteer team by joining the Welcome Desk – a key role in ensuring visitors receive a warm and informative introduction to one of the district’s most treasured institutions.

Whether you’re passionate about history, archaeology, natural sciences, or simply enjoy meeting people, volunteering at the museum offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the cultural life of Uttlesford. From fossil enthusiasts and toy collectors to costume designers and detectorists, all interests are welcome.

Welcome Desk volunteers are the first point of contact for visitors and play an important role in creating a friendly and engaging atmosphere. Responsibilities include greeting guests, providing directions, operating the till, and supporting the museum’s gift shop. Full training and ongoing support are provided.

This is an exciting time to get involved. The museum’s upcoming programme includes:

  • Heritage open days
  • Children’s craft sessions
  • The interactive ‘Murder in the Museum’ app-based game
  • Live civil war re-enactments by The Sealed Knot
  • Talks hosted by the Museum Society
  • ‘Pooch’ – a new exhibition exploring the history and science of dogs
