The Friends of Therfield Heath, founded in 2018, continue to grow their presence across the community, with a busy calendar of events, environmental activities, and partnerships. Their mission remains focused on protecting and promoting the unique landscape of Therfield Heath through engagement, education, and collaboration.
The Friends Annual General Meeting in July offered a chance to reflect on the past year, discuss achievements, and look ahead.
Chair Bryony May praised the impressive efforts of the small but dedicated team and thanked all members, donors, and supporters. Bryony May was re-elected as Chair, with Ray Munden continuing as Treasurer. A warm welcome was extended to a new committee member, Lesley Glover, and Jane Dottridge and Sally Marchant were re-elected.
The Friends continue to focus on promoting awareness of the different aspects of the Heath and its environment. Our annual Bat Walk in partnership with The Herts and Middlesex Bat Group was on 15th August. We celebrate the Autumn equinox on 19th September with a late afternoon gentle yoga session on the Heath led by expert Aline Lemos.
Two plein air painting sessions are planned for September, Great Chishill windmill on 11th and Royston market on 20th during Royston Arts Festival. The colder months bring us indoors at Royston Town Hall enjoying a series of monthly Wildlife Talks. The subjects range from Hedgehogs, Hertfordshire Butterflies, Nature in the Falklands, Biodiversity in building developments to Fowlmere Nature Reserve.
The monthly litter picks on the Heath never fail to amaze with the unexpected items found by our volunteers: traffic signs, a toilet seat, a broken walking pole and an unidentifiable metal object have all been found recently.
