Out and About… Ashwell at Home

The picturesque village of Ashwell welcomes visitors to its popular annual event ‘Ashwell at Home’ with entertainment for all ages.

On Sunday 14th May from 11am to 5pm the historic village of Ashwell opens its doors and gardens to welcome visitors for the 38th year of this ‘open village’ event.

This year’s theme is ‘A Day in the Country’ so, in addition to the much-loved tour of open gardens of many shapes and sizes there will be a range of country-themed activities, displays and talks to see and do.

What’s On?
The programme – which is available in advance from www.ashwellathome.org.uk and announced throughout the day by the village’s very own Town Crier, includes:

  • Stunning gardens both large and small will be open for you to view the many horticultural treasures, with the opportunity to ask their creators any questions you may have or gather gardening hints and tips; together with a plant stall and, new for 2023, ‘Gardeners’ Questions Answered’. Ashwell’s own historical herb garden, wildlife allotment and pretty village cottage garden will all be open too
  • Country Life including ‘Down on the Farm’ exhibition of local farming, including farm animals; dog show; tree trail; talks on food production and butter making
  • Fun for children with free workshops including drama, crafts & folk dancing, junk robots and welly-whanging, storytelling, magic show and a small funfair on the Rec
  • Live Music concerts and live music around the village from classical, to folk to pop – and everything in-between
Dance Morris Men, Tudor and folk dancing around the village – with a chance to join in!
  • Theatre performance of classic scenes from English comedy and a children’s stage school workshop
  • Workshops for adults including crafts, singing and harp mini-lessons
  • Walks and Talks ‘Picnics & Provisions’ a guided walk through Old Ashwell; ‘Food Production in a Sensitive Environment’ and a Tree Trail

Refreshments will be available throughout the day with great value lunches from ploughman’s to hot dogs & burgers, and delicious tea, coffee & cake (including cream teas!) at venues around the village including the school, Parish Rooms, recreation ground, URC and Village Halls

This is a fundraising event and proceeds will be distributed to Ashwell Village Museum, Ashwell Primary School and St Mary’s Church.
