Community News: CADS Hits the Airwaves!

Local drama group CADS has recently branched out into radio.

Having been asked last year by Fonz Chamberlain of Royston Radio whether they could provide some drama for the station, the group responded by recording a version of their one-act stage play Strangers on a Film. This had originally been a radio play by Stephen Wyatt, which Royston-based author Roy Maddox had adapted for the stage, and which has won several awards. The show was broadcast during August last year. They subsequently produced a second play, an atmospheric thriller called The Hitch-Hiker by Lucille Fletcher, which was broadcast in June and have been working on two more, which they hope will be broadcast to coincide with this year’s Royston Arts Festival.

The group has lined up a one-act comedy called Losing the Plot by Cambridge-based Nick Warburton, and the thriller Sorry, Wrong Number, another play by Lucille Fletcher. It’s planned to broadcast the first of these on Royston Radio at 2pm on Wednesday 25th September and the second at the same time the following Wednesday, 2nd October, but watch out for confirmation of these dates and times.

You can hear the station online at www.roystonradio.com/listen or you might prefer to download the app by searching for “Royston Radio” in your app store.

The concentration on radio broadcasting has come about partly as the result of circumstance – in March this year, the Diamond Learning Partnership Trust which manages King James Academy Royston (KJAR) asked CADS to remove from the school site the shipping containers that store their scenery, costumes and equipment. Talks with the Head of KJAR and with local town, district and county councillors to resolve this situation are ongoing, and the group’s committee is also considering other smaller venues in which to perform in future.
